Rome mint. Obv: NERO CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR P IMP P P, laureate bust right wearing aegis. Rev: S-C, Nero's triumphal arch, surmounted by quadriga, statue of Mars between columns. 25.43 grams.
Very fine.
Property of a Surrey, UK, gentleman.
This arch has been identified as that decreed by the Senate in AD 58 to commemorate the eastern victories of Cn. Domitius Corbulo. It was located on the Capitoline Hill but the structure was probably demolished following Nero's downfall a decade later. -
