The so-called 'Paduan' series of imitative or fantasy coins started in the 16th century A.D. with many produced by Giovanni Cavino of Padua, Italy; although sometimes referred to as fakes or forgeries, they originated in era of collecting when authenticity was not always the primary desire of collectors; many Paduans have been copied and re-copied down the centuries since and they are a popular area for some collectors today; a useful work on the subject is The Paduans, cited above, which lists many examples.
