Amlash Terracotta Single-Handled Jug with Head Attachment
CIRCA 1000-800 B.C.
8 1/8 in. (723 grams, 20.6 cm).
Comprising a rounded body resting on three stub legs; funicular mouth and short neck; beneath the rim a mask with pinched nose and two pointed ears, impressed circular eyes and mouth; three vertical decorative strips impressed with the same tool as formed the eyes and mouth; tiered strap handle with two finger-grips to the outer face and impressed detailing running from the neck to the shoulder; rim and one foot partly restored.

FootnotesSeveral tripod vessels were found at Marlik and Amlash. Examples of tripod vessels from other sites include a comparable example with a tripod stand from Agha Evlar. Jars with tripod knob stands and long necks, particularly similar to the Marlik specimen from Zeinab Bejar, were found in the upper level of Tombs C L and B III of Ghalekuti in the Dailaman region of Gilan. Vessels with tripod legs from Kalardasht are dated by Vanden Berghe to 1000-800 B.C.

West Central Asian Bronze Chess Piece Type Seal Matrix with Interlocking Design

Discoid stamp seal with segmented face and tall handle; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Bronze 19 x 18 x 34 mm. This was originally round, with flat face and slightly convex back on which is mounted a tall stalk handle with ridges around it and an oval loop on the top. The design, done in raised lines, consists of two interlocking pairs of strokes, each with a curve in it, and some short strokes act as fillers. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. About two thirds of the rim are now missing, and the handle is worn down, but a fair amount remains and is in good condition.' 9.76 grams, 23 mm

Comprising: frieze with three robed figures flanking a hatched column; two ibexes contending with looped necks, standing bird behind; deeply cut linear image of rearing ibexes; shallow-cut image of a hero with raised arm fending off a winged gryphon, star in the field; frieze with facing hero wrestling two rearing beasts; each supplied with a museum-quality impression. 28.7 grams total, 18-32 mm
