Achaemenid-Phoenician Silver Framed Banded Agate Scaraboid

500-300 B.C.

1 3/4 in. (16.4 grams, 34 mm).

Biconvex in profile with incised winged-scarab motif to upper face; pierced longitudinally for stringing; later silver mount with granule clusters.

Provenance

From the collection of a late London gentleman; by descent 1970 onwards.

This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12425-225392.

Literature

Cf. Moscati, S., I Fenici, p.377, for similar; a finger ring in the British Museum under accession no. 1872,0604.25 features a similar but more ornate scarab in a plainer setting.
