Part of a pediment from an important building, a finely carved and detailed marble sculpture depicting a river god; the figure with broad shoulders and pronounced musculature; the head slightly raised, the animated face with startled expression, wide eyes, and parted lips; the hair and beard characteristically shaggy; the deep incisions between the locks of hair creating a dramatic chiaroscuro effect; a cloak draped around the left shoulder and right hip, pulled across to meet the left wrist; a horn of plenty in the left hand and female nude, with hands behind her back and band to the chest, at his left shoulder; at the left knee, a putto holding a tympanum aloft, nude but for a diagonal crossband to the chest, the head of a bearded man visible below his feathered wing; at the right knee, the head of a horse, facing downwards, with finely detailed curling mane; beneath, the head of a beardless young man with flowing hair; the back flat and uncarved; probably once part of a larger piece. -

Viking Iron Pattern-Welded Sword

A finely-crafted sword with a thin (about 3 mm) blade and long (110 mm) grip; the hilt of the general form of Petersen's Types H and I, featuring a sub-triangular pommel with an elliptical cross-section and with a noticeable step where the rounded pommel connects to the flatter upper guard; the hilt unusually thin and flat for a Viking-period sword; the tang broad and flat, with continuation of the bars of the pattern-welded blade; the lower guard about 90 mm wide, flat and slightly elliptical in cross-section with a broad, rectangular slot for the blade and tang; the blade about 50 mm wide at the hilt, composed from two twisted iron billets and an outer shoe, the billets worked up from blocks of iron of varying grades, twisted flattened, placed side-by-side with the direction of twist opposed, forge-welded to each other, then thinned and stretched to the length of the blade (presently 81 cm); the cutting edges formed from a single billet of steel, split and forged onto the core; the present surface showing the construction method and the characteristic herringbone pattern created by the opposed twist of the central billets. -

Chinese Coral Carving with Youthful Figures

A large and finely carved double-armed red coral branch; designed to be viewed in the round; the left-side arm depicting, to the front, detailed foliage with flowers; a plume of feathers to the top; a naturalistically carved carp suspended, with integral loop and attached to a chain, the links carved from the same single piece of coral without joins; two youthful figures, one with elaborate jewellery, holding a ruyi sceptre; below, the other with hair in two buns, hands joined in a gesture of respect, seated on a large flower; at the base, a finely carved lotus. To the reverse of the left-side branch, detailed foliage with flowers; a naturalistically carved carp; a small songbird perched on a branch. To the front of the right-side branch, an adult figure, probably a Buddhist saint or deity, wearing a diadem and large earrings, a sphere in the right hand, the left hand stretched upwards, an urna to the forehead; draped in finely carved robes; above, an elaborate lotus with a small dog seated, and a youthful figure with elaborate hairstyle, in diving pose with the feet above, decorated boots to the feet, a small lotus in the right hand. To the reverse of the right-side branch, a bearded dragon at the base; elaborately carved foliage above, with an ornate sceptre with ribbon decoration; a lotus flower; the coral carving standing on a later period carved and varnished red wood two-part stand depicting stylised waves in the round with a leaping fish to the uppermost part and brass wire scroll inlay to the basal edge (small chip to edge of one of the four stand feet). -
