A D-section hoop with design to the outer face reserved against an enamelled field, the running design comprising a full-length skeleton with down-pointing arrow between the legs, crown above the head and below the feet; a transverse band with 'MEMO-MENRI-TOX' in three lines with pair of crossed fleur-headed sceptres and sword behind; crossed pick-and-spade with star below; another skull set between pair of antlers and an hourglass with scroll below; the details generally enhanced by engraving to the exposed gold areas; inscribed to the inner face in an italic hand 'Penelope Arnold ob.18 May 1728 æt. 42' and maker's mark 'ES' in blackletter script. -

Medieval King Robert the Bruce of Scotland and Dunfermline Abbey Cokete Seal Matrix Pair

The Cokete Seal of Dunfermline Abbey matrix pair, contained in a hinged wooden box with velvet-lined recesses and labels; the seal matrix in two parts with locating posts (these inserted and soldered in place) and sockets; the obverse matrix (with posts) depicting (reversed and incuse) St. Margaret, founder and benefactress of the abbey, in robe and crown with a sceptre, between two heater shields bearing the royal arms of Scotland (a lion rampant within a double tressure) and the arms of Dunfermline Abbey (a cross moline among five martlets) with the Lombardic legend to the border +S' COKETE REGALITATIS DE DVNFERMELYNN (Cokete Seal of the Regality of Dunfermline); the reverse (counterseal) matrix with heater shield within foliage depicting the royal arms of Scotland and border with the Lombardic legend +ROBERTVS DEI GRACIA REX SCOTORVM (Robert, by the Grace of God, King of the Scots) with floral ornament and quatrefoil stops; the antique, custom made, wooden box with old paper and ink label to the lid with monochrome depiction of the counterseal; also with paper labels to the inside of the box with handwritten text 'The Cokete Seal of the Regality of Dunfermline presented to S. A wrought iron obverse die used to strike a hammered billon denar coin of Ferdinand I (1526-1564 AD), probably from the royal mint at Kremnitz; the shaft of rectangular section, reducing to a circular die face depicting the Hungarian arms with date above and FERDINAND D G R VNG legend, all reversed and incuse; the head of the die showing burring from being hammered in striking coins; the corresponding reverse for this coin would depict Mary, crowned and seated and holding the infant Jesus with PATRONA VNGARIE legend; accompanied by an impression taken from the this die and a print showing the coin type produced. -

A hexagonal cast openwork fitting pierced at each angle and centrally; the border formed as slightly curved panels of regular mono-linear Insular Style interlace with a wave pattern to the inner edge; the central openwork panel formed as a central collet and four quadrupeds, each with a narrow muzzle and leaf-shaped ear, the legs terminating in loops passing over and under the body and limbs; six plain radiating bars across the border, each with a hole; the narrow front and rear sides each with an outward slightly chamfered edge, lateral lugs with evidence of piercing to form a hinge or closure. -

A thin (0.7mm) slightly domed disc with chamfered lip to the outer edge, pierced at the centre and close to the periphery, decorated with dense ornament comprising a border, cross and quadrants; the border with running meander pattern extending onto the rim; the cross with two arms in loose bilinear interlace and two with dense, regular interlace, all within narrow borders; the centre with an incised D-shaped panel on each internal edge; two quadrants with a La Tène Style triskele of discs among scrolled tendrils, remaining two quadrants with opposed Insular Style animals with extended lappets forming a frame of interlace, ring-and-dot to the shoulder and hip. -
