Better than Fine but mounted. An extremely rare date for the entire modern “Sovereign” series, which dates back to 1817.
From the early 20th century family collection of a Suffolk lady.
Following the Great Coinage Act of 1817, the old Guinea, which had been in circulation since the time of Charles II, was replaced by the gold Sovereign. In 1819, only 3,574 Sovereigns were minted in five separate batches between August and November, using gold supplied by private merchants. Two hundred years after they were minted, it is said that there are probably only ten of these sovereigns remaining. -
