Although the main themes represented on the bezels of Dark Ages rings were inspired by Christian themes, sometimes images of animals were also depicted. The lions were connected with Biblical interpretations and episodes in Byzantium as well as in the West.

The ring belongs to the Type 1d of Hadjadj classification, with wide shoulders and a ribbon-like bend to form a bezel engraved with a simple monogram with a pattern borrowed from the Celtic and Germanic iconography. The lateral decoration with vertical lines was arranged in symmetrical parts.

Lozenge-shaped with gusseted lattice and raised pellets to the body, pierced lobe above to accept a ferrous rivet, ledge to reverse. 22.6 grams, 43.2 mm



Found whilst searching with a metal detector near Willingham, South Cambridgeshire, UK, on Sunday 1st September 2024. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.SF-0A3B9D.
