Medieval Silver-Gilt Crucifix Pendant
1400-1550 A.D.Sold for (Inc. bp): £72
Comprising a fragmentary crucifix mounted on a thick backplate with a religious scene to the reverse; the backplate inscribed with I and E above the Christ's shoulders, 'SV' and 'N' visible beneath the left arm, and beneath the right arm 'S' and 'A', the sides with '[?]SVN' and 'E' (left) and 'A[?]R' (right); the relief scene of the reverse comprising two opposing seated figures jointly holding an object, with a plant or foliage in between, possibly depicting the Annunciation scene. 8.62 grams, 26 mm
Found whilst searching with a metal detector in Ravensworth, North Yorkshire, on Thursday 29 April 2021, recorded as Treasure and disclaimed by the Crown with Treasure Reference no.2021 T421. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.DUR-9A51BD. This lot is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D’Amato.
The full inscription would likely have read 'IESVS NAZARENVS', beginning above the arms of Christ and continuing below the arms on the back plate, extending around the sides of the back plate. -
