Charles I was executed on 30 January 1649 and this shilling was issued in the first year of the Commonwealth, declared under the Rump Parliament on 16 May 1649, under the auspices of that Parliament and a Council of State; it was not until 1653 that the army, under Oliver Cromwell, took control.
Seventh head. Obv: profile bust with GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA legend. Rev: crowned arms within garter with date below and BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR legend; in capsule and case with 200th Anniversary of Waterloo certificate by London Mint Office. 175 grams total, case 95 x 95mm.

Near extremely fine; beautiful red patina.

These attractive retro 'pattern' coins were struck in copper-alloys, some with a golden hue, silver and gold to various designs; this type depicts the fabled Three Graces design, only officially used on some modern gold coins of Alderney and Royal Mint bullion issues.
