VIKING URNES ENTWINED DRAGON BROOCH
11TH CENTURY AD
1 1/2" (13 grams, 36mm).

A very rare bronze openwork plate brooch with pin-lugs, pin and catchplate to the reverse; the plate an S-curved dragon executed in Urnes Style with latticework of tendrils enmeshing the body.

PROVENANCE:
Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1980s and 1990s.

LITERATURE:
Cf. similar enmeshed dragon on the ring from Lindholm Høje, Denmark in Wilson, D.M. The Vikings and their Origins, London, 1970, fig.107.

Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence analysis certificate.
