FOOTNOTES:
Unlisted halfcrowns dated 1861, 1866, 1868 and 1871 exist and these coins have caused considerable debate; the present Royal Mint view is that there was '...no production of half crowns in any of these years...' and relying on the official records held by them for this information, although the RM did at one time believe them to be from official dies and they were listed in a footnote in the 1969 Rayner edition of ESC. All examples seem to be worn, some have been deliberately defaced and they may be from around the period 1887-1890 and struck from worn dies.
