English Tokens - Thomas Johnson - Halifax -1776 - Engraved 8 Reales

Dated 7 July 1776 AD

English (or possibly Canadian?) workmanship, on an 18th century Spanish America 8 Reales. Obv: crested arms of the Johnson family with THOMAS JOHNSON HALIFAX JULY 7 1776 inscription. Rev: sailing vessel flanked by two smaller with landscape behind showing church at left imposing building centre and structures to right surmounted by flag. 22.50 grams. Coin smoothed; engraving extremely fine. Rare.

Provenance
Ex UK market.

Footnotes
The arms of three woolsack and a saltire cross are certainly associated with branches of the Johnson family, originating in Britain but spreading through the colonies; it is possible that the shore view could represent Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada as this view is very similar to an 18th century engraving (copy included).
