CELTIBERIAN SUN DISC PLATE

Circa 4th-5th century BC. A flat bronze plate bearing repoussé decoration of a billeted square border enclosing an annulet with radiating spokes; the plate pierced twice close to the upper edge and in the corners for attachment, with five holes on the lower edge to accept wire suspenders with trapezoidal spangles (two remaining). Copper-alloy, 18.7 grams, 157 mm.

Fine condition.

Provenance
From an old English collection.

Footnotes
The term Celtiberian refers to the extension of Hallstatt Culture into the Iberian peninsula during the later Iron Age. Their culture was overrun in the wars between Rome and Carthage fought in this theatre; Celtiberians took part in Hannibal's famous crossing of the Alps.
