A large East European foliate spearhead, socketted, with a thick circular ring around the socket, supporting a squared hook for the attachment of a flag or streamer. 13 3/4 in. (485 grams, 34.7 cm). Very fine condition, professionally cleaned, conserved and restored. [No Reserve]
PROVENANCE:
Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972.

FOOTNOTES:
Such spears were used by the Balkan armies from the 14th century onwards, developing from previous models having a longer iron shaft. They were intended for the attachment of small streamers or flags, according to the 14th century Manasse codex.
