Charles I Silver Luckenbooth Heart Brooch

17th century AD

A Luckenbooth-style silver heart-shaped brooch with articulate pin. 1.83 grams, 27mm (1"). Fine condition. [No Reserve]

Property of a Newcastle University Professor; acquired on the UK art market.

See The Portable Antiquities Scheme Database for comparable examples.

Heart-shaped brooches became popular in the late medieval period onward. Luckenbooth style brooches were sold in small shops around the High Kirk around Edinburgh's High Street, the traditional jewellers' quarter. They were probably love tokens, but have also been used as protective charms against witchcraft.
