Roman Silver Handle with Panther

4th-5th century AD

A silver jug handle formed as the foreparts of a panther, resting with forelegs extended and head erect with mouth open and tongue extended; behind, developing to a flat-section acanthus-leaf handle with curled thumb-pad, transverse ribbed collar; splayed leaf finial. 110 grams, 11.8cm (4 1/2"). Very fine condition.

Provenance
From the collection of a Surrey gentleman; acquired 1970-1980.
