Roman Silver Brooch Pair with Chain

2nd-3rd century AD or later

A matched pair of silver ellipsoid plate brooches, each with La Tène style openwork scrolled ornament, pin-lug and catch to the reverse; connected by a short double-link chain. 18.1 grams, 25.5cm (10"). Fine condition.

Provenance
From the collection of a Surrey gentleman; acquired 1970-1980.

Literature
Cf. Heeren, S. & van der Feijst, L., Fibulae uit de Lage Landen. Beschrijving, Analyse en Interpretatie van een Archeologische Vondstcategorie, Amersfoort, 2017, pl.58, item 59a4.

Footnotes
The object belongs to the group of openwork plate brooches with a two-piece spring, that have been divided from Heeren and Van der Feijst in two main groups: subtype 59a with a regular catchplate in line with the pin, and subtype 59b with a transverse catchplate in the shape of a hook. These brooches are associated with the Roman army, as they show decorative motifs which also appear often on military gear and horse-harnesses.
