Scandinavian Viking Silver Borre-Style Beast Brooch

9th-10th century AD

A silver disc brooch comprising: basal disc with scooped rim, hatched field with reserved knotted serpent motifs, central bell-shaped fitting with four-armed cage above, each arm terminating in a snake's head; four model rams(?) facing the cage each with spirals to the shoulders and hips, horns joined to the tail; at the rim, four bear-heads facing inwards; pin-lugs and catch to the reverse. 86.5 grams, 62mm (2 1/2"). Very fine condition.
