1 1/4" (6.38 grams, 29mm overall, 22.37mm internal diameter (approximate size British Z+1, USA 13, Europe 30.15, Japan 19)).
A D-section hoop with twisted wire borders, expanding shoulders with filigree coils, elliptical plaque with border of radiating chevrons, beaded wire edge to the cell containing inset carnelian intaglio of cloaked Achilles standing over Patroclus resting one arm.
PROVENANCE:
UK art market, acquired prior to 1980; previously in an academic's collection, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

FOOTNOTES:
Achilles and Patroclus are mentioned by Homer in the Illiad as heroes fighting for the Greeks in the Trojan War. Patroclus was eventually killed by the Trojan hero Hector; Achilles mourned for the loss of his friend and companion and took revenge by killing Hector and dragging his body behind his chariot round the walls of Troy.
