MEDIEVAL ROCK CRYSTAL RELIQUARY

A Fatimid/Mesopotamian crystal jar (dating to circa 800-900 AD), re-used 12th-13th century AD as a reliquary. A cylindrical crystal vessel with ribbed bands cut to the upper body and a turned foot; the aperture sealed with a red compound (wax based?). 120 grams, 58 mm.

Condition
Extremely fine condition. Extremely rare.

Provenance
From an old English collection.

Literature
See B. W. Robinson, Islamic Art in the Keir Collection, p. 289, etc. for discussion and listing of Islamic crystal vessels.

Footnotes
Such rock crystal vessels were looted during the crusades and re-used to hold Christian relics, sometimes ending up in European cathedrals. The slight fissure in the crystal gives an opalescent, refractive sheen to the jar when turned in the light.
