PALAEOLITHIC - WOOLLY MAMMOTH TOOTH - POLISHED SECTION - M. PRIMIGENIUS

Circa 30,000 BC. Pleistocene Era. A polished section slice of a tooth of the extinct Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus Primigenius); the slice showing the original biting surface to the upper surface. 170 grams, 150 mm long.

Condition
Fine and attractive. Scarce.

Literature
See Lister & Bahn, Mammoths, for general information (a useful introduction).

Footnotes
Mammoths were animals of the Ice Age; they co-existed with and were hunted by early man. The North Sea basin is a drowned lanscape, flooded after the end of the last Ice Age. Fishing trawlers occasionally bring up bones and relics from when the area was inhabited as dry land.
