Anglo-Saxon Coins - Offa - London / Ealdnoth - 'Lord Stewartby Collection' Portrait Penny

780-792 AD

Light coinage. Obv: profile diademed and draped bust left breaking the inner pellet circle with +OFFA+ +REX legend with inverted R. Rev: +EAL / dNOd legend in two lines with pellets in angles of initial cross and with fleur-ended beaded line with pellets in angles between for the moneyer Ealdnoth at London mint. 1.27 grams. Very fine. The only recorded example for these dies.

Property of a Cambridgeshire gentleman; acquired AMR Coins (with ticket); ex Lord Stewartby collection sale 1, lot 84 (with copy of auction catalogue page); bought Baldwin, 1999 (with ticket); this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.10966-179983.
