Gallo-Roman Lunar Brooch with Lion and Enamelled Inlays

2nd-3rd century AD

A bronze brooch with a lunate body gripped by a couchant lion; two shallow circular recesses in the arms of the crescent with raised discoid cells to the centres, each with remains of enamelling; the lion with a curled tail and detailing to mane, head and face, its hind legs forming the pin lug; pin and catchplate to reverse; accompanied by a custom-made stand. 13.6 grams total, 39mm including stand (1 1/2"). Very fine condition. [No Reserve]

Provenance
Property of an English gentleman; previously in a private UK collection.

Literature
See Richard Hattatt, R., Brooches of Antiquity, Oxford, 1987, pp.163 & 165, no.1023, for a similar type but with a human head rather than a lion, presumed to have been made in Switzerland.
