Gallo-Roman Long Equal-Arm Plate Brooch with Enamelled Inlays

2nd-3rd century AD

A bronze equal-armed brooch with discoid centre flanked by pelta-shaped arms; the body decorated with a band of alternate black and white enamel surrounding an inner ring of bright blue; the arms formed with adorsed crescentic lunettes set with white enamel, and terminating in a small disc of red enamel with a bright blue section of enamel between; accompanied by a custom-made stand. 41.5 grams total, 60mm including stand (2 1/4"). Fine condition. [No Reserve]

Provenance
Property of an English gentleman; exhibited at 'The Science of Imaginary Solutions', Breese Little, London, (10 June-17 September 2016); formerly in a private UK collection; formed 1970s-1980s.
