Egyptian Large Polychrome Ptah-Sokar-Osiris Figure

Late Period, 664-332 BC

A large carved wooden mummiform figure of Ptah-Sokar-Osiris on a rectangular base; the figure with square base panel and dorsal pillar with hieroglyphic text inscribed 'Hail to you, heir, who proceeded from this god, spittle which proceeded from Atum divine', painted costume of russet feathers with gold borders, tripartite wig, painted eye and brow detailing on a cream field, separately made Atef crown above; the base with red painted rims and band of hieroglyphic text announcing 'the great god has come forth from primeval waters for the Osiris wab-priest of Isis who is before the army, wab-priest of Sobek Horwedja, son of the like-titled Nespantyhwtnetjer, born of the Lady of the house Tanetpashefy'; to the upper face of the base, a sliding panel with chamfered sides, square recess beneath. 2.2 kg, 66cm (26"). Fine condition, beard absent. A museum-quality display piece.

Provenance
Property of a London gentleman; previously from a Dutch private collection; acquired by his grandfather before 1974, thence by descent; accompanied by a copy of the original invoice (third item on the list), and family photograph of the grandfather and the shopkeeper standing outside the antiquities shop where he bought the piece, in Luxor, Egypt, in the early 1970s.
