GREEK LARGE APULIAN RED FIGURE LEKANIS

Circa 4th century BC. The decoration enlivened with restrained use of white and ochre slip; the lid showing on Side A: a lady of fashion, her hair dressed in a kekryphalos, wearing drop earrings and necklace, seated right, head turned to the left over an altar, a mirror in her left hand; on Side B: a draped male figure seated right, holding a cista in his left hand; sash, altar and implements in the field; the top of the handle with a rosette design; a band of wave pattern on the lid rim, vertical strokes around the base. Ceramic, 1.7 kg, 34 cm wide.

Good fine condition.

Purchased from a London gallery in the 1980's.
