Visigothic Jewelled Scabbard Mount

6th century AD

A scabbard mount for the sheath of a knife comprising: a bell-shaped bronze plaque and applied panels with ring-and-dot ornament; elliptical mouth (frog) with mounting rivets; L-shaped gilt-bronze guard with cloisonné garnet ornament and green-glass cabochon stud, notches to the edge. 47 grams, 73mm (3"). Fine condition.

With Alexander Gallery, New York, USA, before 2009; accompanied by an independent specialist report and valuation by graduate gemmologist and jewellery expert Anna Rogers, GIA GG, BA, Gem-A, ref. no.163734/1/9/2020.
