Western Asiatic Jemdet Nasr Type Cylinder Seal with Horned Animals

31st-30th century BC

An onyx cylinder seal with white vein, drilled vertically for suspension; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a typed and signed scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'The design shows a frieze of two running horned animals with plant motifs above their backs, the whole design resting on a base line. This is a seal from Syria, c. 3000 B.C., in the Jemdet Nasr style, but with distinctive Syrian features. It is in very good condition and a good example of its kind.' 14 grams, 28mm (1"). Fine condition.

Provenance
The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item number R-121; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; and accompanied by a copy of a typed and signed scholarly note by the Professor.
