Elizabethan Gold Signet Ring with Scottish Rampant Lion

16th century AD

A gold signet ring comprising a slender flat-section hoop and discoid bezel with ropework border, incuse heraldic lion rampant facing to left with jaws open and tongue extended; 'TR' monogram maker's mark to the underside of the bezel. 7.79 grams, 22mm overall, 20.73mm internal diameter (approximate size British W, USA 11, Europe 25.0, Japan 24) (3/4"). Fine condition, small scuff to bezel rim. A large wearable size.

Property of a Chelmsford, UK, gentleman since 2004; previously owned by his mother since at least the early 1990s.

Cf. Oman, C.C. British Rings 800-1914, London, 1974, plate 42(C) and 43 (D).

The rampant lion facing left is depicted on the Royal banner of the kings of Scotland, in use since 1222 AD in the reign of Alexander II; the single rampant lion still appears as part of the Royal arms of the United Kingdom to this day, following the Act of Union between England and Scotland under Queen Anne in 1707 AD.
