ROMAN GOLD 'SACRED FIRE' INTAGLIO RING

Circa 2nd century AD. A gold finger ring comprising a D-section hoop expanding slightly, the bezel formed as an elliptical raised panel with filigree knotwork on the sides; the upper surface dished with a central elliptical cloison bearing a garnet intaglio depicting a column with broad top emitting flames. Gold and garnet, 4.10 grams, 23.41 mm. overall (Approximate size British L 1/2, USA 5, Europe 12.34, Japan 12).

Condition
Extremely fine condition, complete and wearable.

Provenance
From an old English collection.

The image probably represents one of the aedes sacra or perpetual sacred fires of Rome.
