Post Medieval Gold Ring with Heraldic Gemstone

19th century AD

A small gold finger ring with inset bloodstone panel, intaglio of two heraldic crests, a regardant fish(?) and chessman (bishop?) above a scroll with legend 'QUI VEILLE TRAVAILLE' ('who watches works', roughly equivalent to the English phrase by John Milton 'they also serve who only stand and wait'). 6.94 grams, 20.69mm overall, 16.43mm internal diameter (approximate size British L, USA 5 3/4, Europe 11.24, Japan 10) (3/4"). Very fine condition.

Provenance
Property of a London gentleman; formerly acquired before 1970.
