Ottonian Gold Ring with Beast

9th century AD

A gold ring with narrow hoop, triangular shoulders with niello-filled detailing, disc bezel with beaded border, regardant beast with leaf-shaped tail and random spotting to the flank, pellet eye, notched mane reserved on a niello field. 3.82 grams, 21.62mm overall, 18.83mm internal diameter (approximate size British N 1/2, USA 6 3/4, Europe 14.35, Japan 13) (1"). Very fine condition.

Provenance
From the private jewellery collection of a UK gentleman; acquired from a London coin fair in the early 1990s; previously in a South German collection; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no. 10731-175422.
