Germanic Gold and Garnet Pendant

5th-7th century AD

A circular gold pendant with central polished garnet and recessed band around, the outer band set with triangular polished garnets having slightly domed and proud upper surfaces set in cells with wire walls to show an eight-pointed star pattern; an attached strip loop with incised lines at outer edges. 10.05 grams, 31mm (1 1/4"). Very fine condition.

Property of a North London gentleman; acquired on the UK art market before 2000.
See Adams, N., Bright Lights in the Dark Ages, The Thaw Collection of Early Medieval Ornaments, New York, 2014, item 6.10, for a similarly formed piece (fitted as a disc brooch); see Berlin Museum, The Merovingian Period, Europe without Borders, Munich, 2007, no.I.5.1, for a bird-shaped mount with very similar shaped and domed garnets; also for a number of circular brooches of similar form.
