Scandinavian Gilt Silver Brooch with Garnets

6th-7th century AD

A hollow-formed silver-gilt disc-on-bow brooch comprising a rectangular headplate with inset garnet cloison discs and surrounding cells each with a wafer-stamped foil behind; short bow with similar large disc bearing a garnet cloison centre and segmented border; Z- and S-scrolled lappets flanking the junction with the triangular footplate formed as a facing bull's head in garnet cloisonné; pierced lugs and catch to the reverse. 67 grams, 95mm (3 3/4"). Very fine condition.

Provenance
From an old European collection; acquired in Munich in the 1970s; accompanied by geologic report TL005235 from Dr Ronald Bonewitz.
