ENGLISH MILLED COINS - GEORGE III - 1797 - CARTWHEEL TWOPENCE PATCH BOX
18TH CENTURY A.D.

Georgian patch box formed from a 1797 cartwheel twopence coin with finely threaded obverse lid. (20.59 grams.). Very fine condition; few marks at edge.

PROVENANCE:
Acquired Whitton & Lang Auctions.
Property of a Kent gentleman.

LITERATURE:
For coin see S. 3776.

FOOTNOTES:
The practice of making small 'patch' or similar boxes from coins was popular in the 18th-19th century period; the large size of the 1797 cartwheel twopence coins made them especially suited to such use.
