Phoenician Funerary Stele for King Hilles Son of King Uzriyya

9th-8th century BC

A rectangular stone funerary stele with Phoenician inscription 'MLK ḤLṠ / BN MLKʻZ / R[Y]BN' (Melek Ḥillès Ben Melek ʻUzrlyya Ben [...] 'King Hilles son of King ʻUzriyya'); Nassib Sabbagh writes 'Very important and unique Phoenician inscribed funerary stele mentioning two kings ... This stele has been seen and photographed by Prof. René Lemaire of the Sorbonne. It had been seen and studied by Prof. McCarter of Baltimore Uni.' 7.8 kg, 32cm (12 1/2"). Fine condition.

Property of a gentleman; from a Mayfair, London, UK, gallery; accompanied by a hand written scholarly note with translation signed by Nassib Al Sabbagh dated 12 December 1996.
