Phoenician Funerary Stele for Ben Azizu

9th-8th century BC

A rectangular stone funerary stele with Phoenician inscription 'LBNʻZZ' (for Ben ʻAzizu'); Nassib al Sabbagh writes " 'Aziz is a common Semitic name which denotes power and strength. It is one of the adjectives of Allah and survives extensively in the name "Abdul ʻAziz" (slave of the Almighty). 8.2 kg, 33cm (13"). Fine condition.

Property of a gentleman; from a Mayfair, London, UK, gallery; accompanied by a scholarly note with translation signed by Nassib Al Sabbagh dated 13 December 1996.
