2nd-3rd century AD

A carved schist frieze fragment depicting a crenellated band with figures below, three shown as male busts with ushnisha and luxuriant hair, one with a moustache and holding an alms bowl (perhaps Bodhisattva Maitreya); remains of two more figures in outline; mounted on a custom-made stand. 4.9 kg, 30cm including stand (11 3/4"). Fine condition.

Acquired on the London art market before 2000.
