ROMAN FIGURAL PLAQUE

Circa 1st-3rd century AD. A cast lead plaque with dense imagery: a round-headed arch with spiral columns and roundel detailing; above the arch a hippocamp and a serpent with looped body; within the arch at the top a half-height figure with a billeted browband and radiating lines, with a cloak pinned at his right shoulder and his right hand raised; in front of him the rail of a chariot and two horses facing outwards; below, a central robed figure flanked by opposed horsemen, with a shield- and spear-bearing soldier to the right and a figure with raised right hand to the left; below, a central scene of three figures gathered round a table where food is being prepared or eaten, above a cauldron flanked by two small quadrupeds; to the left a large standing figure and a smaller advancing towards the centre; to the right two standing figures looking towards the centre. Lead, 160 grams, 91.0 mm.

Condition
Very fine condition, slight wear to raised surfaces.

Provenance
Found Thames foreshore, 1970.

Footnotes
The figure in the chariot with the lines radiating from his head may be the sun-god, Apollo, on his daily journey across the heavens.
