MEDIEVAL FIGURAL KNIFE

Late 14th-early 15th century AD. A domestic table and general-purpose knife of whittle-tang construction; the blade with straight back and gracefully curved cutting edge expanding to an elliptical-section collar; the handle of oval-section wood, with end-cap of gilt copper-alloy bearing figural decoration: one one face within an arch a female figure in flowing robes advancing left, with hands drawn up to the waist and a nimbus about the head, on the other face within an arch a bishop in flowing robes advancing left, with mitre and crook, on the upper face of the cap a male bust facing left, with short hair, pointed features and wearing a stylized crown. Gilt copper-alloy, wood and iron, 31.7 grams, 182 mm.

Condition
Very fine condition, slight loss to wooden handle and cutting edge.

Provenance
Found Thaxted, Essex, when clearing village pond in 1990's.
