OSTROGOTHIC FACETTED FIGURAL FINGER RING

Circa 6th century AD. A facetted gold finger ring comprising a segmented hoop and rectangular bezel with incuse decoration; the facets decorated with three crosses pattee and four human busts, two male and two female; the bezel with incuse design of two opposed male busts with a cross between them, one face bearded, the other clean-shaven. Gold, 14.9 grams, 22.4 mm. overall (Approximate size British T, USA 9 3/4, Europe 21.26, Japan 20).

Condition
Extremely fine condition, cleaned, complete and wearable. Extremely rare.

Ex Aston collection.

Footnotes
The Ostrogoths ruled in Italy and the Balkans from the mid-5th to the mid-6th century. They adopted the Arian form of Christianity, which differed theologically from the trinitarian views of their Italian subjects.
