GOTHIC EVOLVED KNEE BROOCH

Circa 5th century AD. An ornate evolved knee-brooch with gold and silver filigree hood for the spring, silver stud and gold filigree bands across the head, a horizontal rectangular panel of gold filigree within a silver stud border for the upper bow and footplate, and a similar vertical panel for the lower bow; the gilded pin in place on the reverse. Copper-alloy, gold and silver, 30 grams, 34 mm.

Condition
Very fine condition. Extremely rare.

From a deceased estate.

Footnotes
Believed originally found in Pannonia, in the 5th century part of the Gothic territory of Moesia. The knee-brooch was originally a 2nd century Roman type of fastener.
