Medieval English Bible Manuscript Leaf

Early 13th century AD

A vellum leaf from a single-volume Bible with the Latin translation of Saint Jerome (the Vulgate); each side with two columns of 43-44 lines in black ink in a small blackletter bookhand (minimum height about 1.5mm), written space 150 x 98mm; large decorated initial P of blue, patterned with white and flourished with red; text arranged according to the chapter divisions attributed to Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury (1207-28). 2.79 grams, 19.5 x 14cm (7 3/4 x 5 1/2"). Very fine condition.

Property of a North London gentleman; acquired on the UK art market before 2000; accompanied by an old collector's cataloguing and acquisition sheet (£395).
