SAXON EDGAR - BATH?/BIORHTULF - TWO LINE PENNY

959-973 AD. Pre Reform coinage. Obv: small cross at centre with +E.ADG.A[ ]REX legend. Rev: inscription BIORHT VLFMo for the moneyer Biorhtwulf in two lines with three small crosses between and a cross with pellet to each side above (and below?). 1.24 grams.

Condition
About as struck but chipped. Extremely rare moneyer.

Provenance
Found near Dorchester. With a letter from the Ashmolean Museum (Dr Michael Metcalf) briefly discussing the coin, and a group of old collector tickets.

Footnotes
The mint origins of the Pre Reform pennies of Edgar remain uncertain. Studies based upon the lettering and moneyer names have indicated possibilities and it has been suggested that this coin might have been minted at Bath.
