Large Western Asiatic Cylinder Seal with Pseudo-Hieroglyphics

Middle Syrian, late 2nd-early 1st millennium BC

A concave green chalcedony cylinder seal with five registers, motifs to both ends for stamping, each register with different pictures with scenes, individuals and animals, partly pseudo-hieroglyphics, as well as Egyptianising pseudo-cartouches. 21 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). Extremely fine condition. Excessively rare.

Provenance
The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; accompanied by Geologic Report TL005241 by Dr Ronald Bonewitz.

Literature
Cf. L. Delaporte, Catalogue des Cylindres Orientaux II, pl.93: 7 (A. 831); B. Buchanan, Catalogue of Ancient Near Eastern Seals in the Ashmolean Museum. Vol. I. Cylinder Seals, No. 612; H. Kühne, Das Rollsiegel in Syrien. Zur Steinschneidekunst in Syrien zwischen 3300 und 330 vor Christus, Tübingen, 1980, p.122-123, No. 71.

Footnotes
Seals of this kind are extremely rare, which makes interpretation and local and temporal assignment more difficult. Accompanied by a museum-quality impression.
