Roman Crossbow Brooch

4th century AD

A bronze crossbow brooch with three onion-shaped knops to the stepped headplate, deep bow, rectangular footplate with chamfered sides and catch to the reverse. 81.3 grams, 88mm (3 1/2"). Fine condition. [No Reserve]

Property of an English gentleman; acquired at Thomas del Mar, Olympia Auctions, 24 June 2015, lot 255; previously in the John Woodman Higgins Armory Collection, Massachusetts, USA; formerly with Comtesse de Broussiere, until circa 1913, said to have been found by her father Julien Greau, in the Rhone Valley towards the end of the 19th century, Karl Freund (Anderson JWHA Inv.
