COSTA RICA - 1889 COUNTERMARK ON ENGLISH VICTORIA 1842 SIXPENCE

Dated 1842. A Victoria English sixpence bearing on the obverse the circular Costa Rica countermark of a walking lion with HABILITADA POR EL GOBIERNO legend (this being normally the reverse mark used). 2.75 grams.

Condition
Coin, good fine; countermark, very fine and better. Apparently unrecorded use of this Costa Rica mark on an English coin. Possibly a trial piece from the Heaton mint?

Literature
For coin, S. 3908; for countermark, K&M, Costa Rica, p. 250.

Footnotes
A shortage of coin resulted in silver 50 centavo coins of Columbia being countermarked at the Heaton mint, England for use in Costa Rica in 1889-90. The Columbian coins so marked also bear a different countermark (arms and COSTA RICA) on the obverse. Worthy of further research.
