MEDIEVAL BURGONET HELMET

16th-17th century AD. An open-faced burgonet helmet comprising a hemispherical skull formed from a single sheet with integral triangular peak, prominent crest and slightly everted neck; to each side a convex oval cheekpiece hinged at the temple. Iron, 995 grams, 24 cm.

Condition
Fine condition, some restoration.

Provenance
Ex Robertson collection.

Literature
See Tarassuk, L. and Blair, C. Complete Encyclopaedia of Arms and Weapons.

Footnotes
The burgonet form of helmet was introduced in the mid-16th century as a lighter, cheaper and less cumbersome substitute for the sallet; it was sometimes worn with a 'falling buffe' for additional protection to the lower face and throat. Helmets fashioned from a single sheet were more highly valued than the more numerous types riveted along the crest.
