ROMAN BRONZE TRIAL PIECE

Two test-strikes from an unofficial ("barbaric") mint, apparently late 4th century. Left-facing busts were rare in the later Roman period and this, together with the odd legend of CASER which even despite the usual errors made due to the illiteracy of barbaric engravers resembles no known official legend, and also that the second die has no legend at all, may indicate that these were test strikes for seals, rather than coins. The die on the right would result in a right-facing, draped bust holding what appears to be a mappa. On official Roman coins, the mappa was used, for example, by Constantine I and II and Licinius I and II on left-facing busts. 7.00 grams, 40 mm long.

Condition
Very fine condition. Unique.

Provenance
From an old English collection.

Date
